My Eight-Thousanders
Josef Šimůnek (* July 21, 1964 in Jičín) is a Czech mountaineer, ski mountaineer, UIAGM mountain guide, chairman of the Czech Association of Mountain Guides, a member of L.K.P. Prachov, and entrepreneur. He graduated from Jičín Grammar School and studied at the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Czech Technical University in Prague, specializing in geodesy and cartography. In his youth, he tried various sports including gliding and judo, but at the age of 17, he fell in love with climbing — the Prachov Rocks were just a short distance away.
He has undertaken a total of fifteen expeditions to eight-thousanders, always without the use of supplemental oxygen. Since 1995, he has led expeditions as the expedition chief. He participated in expeditions to Cho Oyu (1993, 2006, 2011) and Dhaulagiri (1994, 2021), Shishapangma (1995, 2003, 2007), as well as Manaslu (1996), Makalu (1998), Lhotse (1999), Kangchenjunga (2000), K2 (2001), and Mount Everest (2005, 2022).
